Position overview

We are seeking a Technical Database Administrator who will focus on the design, develop and support the database services which underpin the University’s key information systems. Also, to contribute to the objectives of the University’s strategic plan by providing information technology services that are robust, reliable, effective and efficient.

Reporting to the Applications Support Manager, you will work as part of a team who is responsible for the maintenance and support of the Database Service infrastructure, including performance tuning and monitoring, capacity planning, backup and archiving, log maintenance, and incident resolution.

To be successful in this role you will have considerable experience in managing databases in a large and complex IT environment. Ideally you will have experience with large enterprise applications such as Finance, HR, Student Management Systems and ideally the Tribal SITS: Vision Student Management application.

Purpose statement

The Technical Database Administrator role is to design, develop and support the database services which underpin the University’s key information systems. Also, to contribute to the objectives of the University’s strategic plan by providing information technology services that are robust, reliable, effective and efficient.

Key accountabilities

Planning and Development
• Take a collaborative role in the architectural design and implementation of database services including continuous improvement.
• Assist in the strategic planning and development of the University’s information technology infrastructure as required
• Undertake relevant project work as allocated by the Infrastructure Management Team
• Assist in the development of appropriate policies and procedures as required for University information technology services
• Liaise with ITS infrastructure team to ensure hardware/infrastructure is maintained in a healthy state and patching etc is kept up to date

Technical
• Responsible for the maintenance and support of the Database Service infrastructure, including performance tuning and monitoring, capacity planning, backup and archiving, log maintenance, and incident resolution
• Oversee the administration of the Database Service, including database provisioning, requirements analysis and change management
• Primary responsibility for the implementation, management and maintenance of the University’s high-availability Microsoft SQL cluster
• Responsible for the quality, completeness and currency of documentation associated with the Database Service and related infrastructure
• Provide operation requirements input into new develops and/or application releases

General
• Proactively participate in the Information Technology Services support teams by providing advice and conducting research as required.
• Creation and maintenance of business continuity plans including insuring backups are created and verified
• Ensure effective controls and measures are in place to allow audit and reviews to be conducted effectively and efficiently
• Proactively investigate new products and technologies as appropriate
• Provide incident root-cause analysis, resolution and maintenance of the University’s information technology services as required
• Provide back up and escalation as required for the Systems Coordinator - IBISS

Person specification

Qualifications

• A tertiary qualification in Information Science, Computer Science or equivalent
• An industry recognised qualification in the field of database administration

Experience

• A minimum of 3 years’ industry experience in managing the technical infrastructure supporting large scale clustered SQL environments
• Experience in the technical design and implementation of database platforms
• Experience in systems integration, operating systems scripting and advanced database concepts
• Experience with the processes which form the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), particularly Change Management, is essential
• Experience with database manipulation tools such as structured query languages
• Experience with Oracle and other database platforms would be an advantage
