Applications are invited for a permanent, full-time position as Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Visual Communication Design or Spatial Design at Ngā Pae Māhutonga – The School of Design – within the College of Creative Arts (CoCA) on the Massey University Wellington Campus. The level of appointment will depend on qualifications and experience.
The successful candidate will have strong affiliations with Pasifika communities and demonstrate a high level of achievement in practice, research and teaching in one or more of the following specialisms: typography; graphic design; brand experience; information design; interaction design; user experience; immersive design (design for virtual and mixed reality); concept or entertainment design; illustration; service design; urban design; interior design; exhibition design; or performance design.

Aligned with leading trends in design practice and scholarship, the appointee will develop and extend offerings within the undergraduate and postgraduate Visual Communication Design or Spatial Design curricula, meeting critical standards and expectations for the discipline and the industry.
The successful candidate should possess strong human-centered design skills and demonstrate a capacity for conducting original, creative research. While teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate university levels would be beneficial, most value would be seen in a strong vision for research-led teaching and innovative pedagogy. Familiarity with contemporary design research methods/ethnography, design thinking practices, and progressive social, civic and entrepreneurial design practices is encouraged. We welcome applicants who can demonstrate strong connections and affiliation to Pasifika communities coupled with the ability to engage with a diverse and wide audience.
Applicants should possess a strong background in professional design practice. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research profile within their discipline. The College of Creative Arts adopts an inclusive interpretation of research in regard to all domains of creative and performing arts practice, including practices traditionally viewed as professional practice. The school has excellent facilities, and there are many opportunities for funded research.
The candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to service in the form of administration and committee participation, and will be required to take on different roles and responsibilities within the School of Design as needed. An open, collaborative approach and willingness to work across areas and departments of the school, college and university is a priority.

Applicants will have an MFA, MDes, DDes, or PhD or equivalent degree in a related field from an accredited institution and/or significant industry experience.
Candidates will be asked to articulate their vision of design in the 21st century, and explain how that vision informs their teaching and research. This statement should be accompanied by a letter of interest, CV, descriptions of courses taught and/or proposed, twenty-five images of creative works—including at least five to ten examples of student work if available—and the names and contact details for four references.

Teaching and Learning
Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching via all modes of teaching and delivery including blended and online.
Design and develop the academic and administrative content of courses and design the appropriate assessment criteria and processes, understanding their contribution to the overall graduate profiles of the qualifications.
Coordinate and administer the teaching delivery and assessment of all papers allocated by the Programme Leader or Head of School.
Develop and implement innovative pedagogies that prioritise the student experience and enhance the practice-based focus of the qualifications.
Ensure that all teaching is research-informed and relevant, and that course materials are regularly updated.
Supervise the research activities of graduate and undergraduate students and assist in the supervision of students/research projects at a postgraduate level.
Supervise the teaching and marking of tutors/senior tutors, graduate assistants and technical support personnel.
Participate in the peer review of teaching to enhance the quality of course design and delivery.
Arrange for regular student evaluations of teaching for all papers/courses for which paper-coordination responsibilities have been assigned.
Be accessible to students by providing consultation time on course-related matters.
Research and Scholarship
Undertake an active and appropriate programme of academic research, including participation in team-based research as appropriate, to the level expected by the University’s Strategic Research Capability Policy.
Produce and disseminate creative work, papers or other scholarly works through commissions, exhibitions, performances, books, papers and/or other scholarly works in academic contexts.
Review research papers and other scholarly publications.
Participate in and present research at academic conferences.
Contribute to School/Institute/University seminars and workshops.
Seek research funding where there is opportunity to do so.
Submit recent publications data to Research Management Services for entry onto the Research Information Management System (RIMS) and Symplectic as required.
Periodically enter updated ‘Peer Esteem’ and ‘Contributions to the Research Environment’ information onto RIMS and Symplectic as required.
Contribute to discipline leadership through the development of, or participation in, conferences, wananga, symposia, public lectures, public debates, exhibitions, and other community service activities that further advance the profession and connect the university with relevant local, national and international communities.
Assist the School/College to develop and strengthen relationships with professional and stakeholder communities as appropriate, with an emphasis on building connections across a broad range of Pasifika communities.
Contribute to the broader community and society through the University’s obligations under the Education Act to fulfill “the role as critic and conscience of society”.
Assist the School/College/University to develop an environment that gives effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Support students through student advising, pastoral support, and the design of academic student services that facilitate a positive experience for them at University.
Support colleagues, research students and external academic peers through journal editing, paper reviewing, thesis examination, refereeing grant applications, sitting on funding panels, quality assessment and assurance panels.
Serve on University and/or School/College/Department committees.
Observe University policy and codes of practice in all teaching, research, community service and administrative practices.
Contribute to the development of a School/College/Department environment that values teamwork, cooperation and collegiality.
