The Built Environment and Construction Cluster in the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology invites applications from academic scholars who are teaching and researching in the area of Building Technology. This full-time permanent position is based at the University’s Auckland campus, in Albany.

The School of Engineering and Advanced Technology (SEAT) has over 50 years contributed to the development of Aotearoa New Zealand and its international community. An integral part of SEAT is our department of the Built Environment and Construction (BEC). The Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS), the NZ Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NZIQS) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredit BEC’s programmes.
To be successful in appointment, you will have a PhD in Building Technology or complementary field, demonstrated teaching and research expertise and a record of accomplishment of research outputs. You should have a passion for education and research in Building Technology and industry experience.
Appointment will be on the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor scale at a level commensurate with qualifications and experience.
To enhance the learning and qualification outcomes of Massey's students and the scholarly outputs of the University by undertaking an effective programme of teaching; undertaking research including research supervision of students; engaging in the pursuit of external funding; providing administrative and professional service to the University and broader academic or professional communities, developing a programme of co-curricular activities to enhance experiential learning.
Cluster Leader, Built Environment and Construction
There are three fields of contribution that are expected:
1) Teaching and supervision;
2) Research and enterprise;
3) Academic citizenship.
The level of appointment will be assessed on whether the applicant demonstrates ‘sustained contribution’ for Lecturer, ‘making a substantial contribution to’ for Senior Lecturer Level 1, ‘advancing or leading’ for Senior Lecturer Level 2’ and ‘sustained distinction’ for Associate Professor in the following three fields.
Teaching and Supervision
• Provide leadership in curriculum innovation in Building Technology (Senior Lecturer & Associate Professor);
• Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and coordination as required. This may include block mode/campus/regional courses on a different campus to where you are normally situated and use of the designated Learning Management System;
• Develop and teach major curriculum components of courses, in conjunction with colleagues in the Cluster (i.e. discipline group);
• Undertake continuing personal professional development activities consistent with maintaining excellence in teaching and supervision;
• Coordinate and administer the teaching of subjects, which includes participating in the University’s formal procedures of evaluating teaching and course delivery;
• Contribute to the development of a supportive environment for Construction students and develop strategies for retention and achievement of Construction programmes from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Research and Enterprise
• Develop an active, appropriate and viable personal research programme and/or participate in team-based research;
• Provide research leadership to the Cluster (Senior Lecturer & Associate Professor);
• Engage with industry to address their research needs;
• Publish papers or other scholarly works in academic journals and review papers;
• Generate research funding;
• Supervise the research activities of graduate and undergraduate students and assist in the supervision of students/research projects at a postgraduate level;
• Work collaboratively with colleagues.
• Supporting colleagues and mentoring junior staff (Senior Lecturer & Associate Professor);
• Participate in community service activities that further advance the profession or field and which are consistent with the University’s Charter and Strategic Plan;
• Assist the School to develop an environment that gives effect to the obligations of the Treaty of Waitangi;
• Serve on University and/or Institute Committees;
• Ensure the observance of University policy and codes of practice in all teaching, research, community service and administrative practices;
• Contribute to the development of an Institute working environment of teamwork and cooperation.
Any other duties as required by the Head of School or Cluster Leader.
• Possess a degree in construction management, architecture, engineering, building science, civil engineering or similar, and a relevant Masters or Doctoral degree, as well as an appropriate record of research and publications in building technology, sustainable buildings or a field relevant to construction economics, construction project management, architecture or civil engineering.
• Hold current and relevant registration in one or more in a Built Technology related professional institute (e.g. NZIA, RICSNZIOB , CIOB).
• Industry experience in the areas of building technology, construction economics, health and safety, BIM or procurement is required;
• Exemplary, recent, relevant teaching experience, within a university or other tertiary teaching environment is required;
• A research publication record in reputable peer-reviewed academic and/or professional journals, and/or books suitable for appointment at Lecturer to Senior Lecturer level;
• A proven record of accomplishment of exemplary research supervision up to and including doctoral level; and significant successful experience of generating external research funding.
• Publications commensurate with the appointment level.
• Demonstrated skills in teaching, internally and at a distance, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
• Clear, confident and skilled online and classroom facilitator;
• Demonstrated ability to lead academic courses, develop and deliver teaching materials, assess student progress and provide appropriate and timely feedback;
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a research programme and/or research projects and to manage research projects effectively;
• Proven record of mentoring of postgraduate students;
• Well-developed interpersonal and administration skills;
• Ability to work independently, and as part of a team, and to take initiative and responsibility;
• Effective and appropriate communication and relationships with academic and professional staff and students;
• Effective management of time and timely compliance with appropriate administrative requirements;
• Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students from a diverse range of backgrounds;
• Excellent presentation and communication skills in both written and oral English;
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a complex, multi-campus environment and to work cooperatively across disciplines;
• Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of organisations in teaching, consulting and research;
• Demonstrated ability to assist with administrative functions at School and College levels.
