Position overview

The School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Marketing or Marketing Communication (i.e. equivalent to the Assistant/Associate Professor rank elsewhere). Our School is growing and innovating, having recently led the development of the Bachelors of Retail and Business Management and Masters in Analytics (Business), and also recently led the Massey Business School (MBS) in securing external research funding and endowments. We pride ourselves on a positive culture that enables scholars to thrive in their teaching, research and professional service, including engagement with industry. MBS, in which our programmes are housed, has a proud history, with New Zealand's longest running MBA, journalism, and entrepreneurship/small business programmes. We have a presence and offer programmes over three campuses (Albany, Palmerston North and Wellington), and also across New Zealand through distance and online education. Our Programmes are accredited by AACSB and AMBA, alongside several discipline-specific endorsements. The School is benchmarked by the AACSB as among the top five per cent of business schools globally.

This position will be based at Massey University’s Wellington campus, located in New Zealand's political and cultural capital. The city is consistently ranked amongst the most liveable in the world.

To be successful in appointment to this role, you will have a PhD in Marketing, and be familiar with research and practice in at least one of the following: Digital marketing, Marketing strategy, Consumer Behaviour and Branding. You will also exhibit a record of, or a strong potential for, a programme of research in marketing that is innovative and has impact. You will need to be a committed and effective teacher and have the ability to engage first-year students in an introductory marketing course, as well as higher level courses. Experience and an inclination to engage with business and creative industries is a plus. To enhance the learning and qualification outcomes of Massey's students and the scholarly outputs of the University by undertaking an effective programme of teaching; undertaking research including research supervision of students; engaging in the pursuit of external funding; providing administrative and professional service to the University and broader academic or professional communities.

Key accountabilities

Key accountabilities
1. Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
2. Develop and teach major curriculum components of courses.
3. Coordinate and administer the teaching of subjects.
4. Supervise the research activities of graduate and undergraduate students and assist in the supervision of students/ research projects at a postgraduate level.
5. Undertake continuing personal professional development.
1. Undertake an active, appropriate and viable personal research programme or participate in team-based research.
2. Publish papers or other scholarly works in academic journals and review papers.
3. Present research and act as a discussant at academic conferences.
Service to the Community
1. Participate in community service activities that further advance the profession or field and which are consistent with the University’s Charter and Strategic Plan.
2. Assist the School to develop an environment which gives effect to the obligations of the Treaty of Waitangi.
University Responsibilities
1. Serve on University and/or School committees.
2. Ensure the observance of University policy and codes of practice in all teaching, research, community service and administrative practices.
3. Contribute to the development of a School working environment of teamwork and cooperation.

Person specification


A PhD in marketing. A precursor qualification in business is desirable, but not essential..


Successful experience in tertiary teaching is essential.
Experience with teaching large classes and in distance education is desirable, but not essential.
Previous industry experience in any field of marketing/ sales is desirable.
A track record in research, including the demonstrated ability to write refereed articles.
Experience in writing and winning grants is desirable, but not essential
