Position overview

As a Veterinary Intern in Equine Clinical Studies, you will primarily be assisting with the provision of equine diagnostic and treatment services to the referral and first opinion cases in the Equine Veterinary Clinic. You will be assigned on a rotating basis to clinical services and will be scheduled for after-hours on-call duties. The position includes participation in the clinical teaching of undergraduates, including supervision of final year students in the veterinary teaching hospital, and practical classes within the veterinary and equine science programs. A suitably motivated and eligible applicant will have the opportunity to enrol in a Massey University post-graduate program, which may involve a clinically-oriented research project.

You should possess a veterinary degree registerable (General or Limited Academic Scope) with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand [http://www.vetcouncil.org.nz/gainReg.php]. If you are only eligible for Limited registration with VCNZ, then you must provide evidence of English proficiency in accordance with the requirements of the VCNZ [http://www.vetcouncil.org.nz]. A successful applicant would preferably have a minimum of one year of mixed or equine veterinary practice experience, although recent graduates will be considered. You must also possess initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility, and effective communication skills and be able to work within a dynamic team environment.

Job description

Purpose statement

The appointee will be accountable to the Head of the Institute through the Massey Equine Group Leaders for all matters relating to the preparation, teaching and administration of general and related subjects, academic studies and any university administration. Day to day duties will be overseen by the Equine Service Chief and accountable to the VTH Director.

Key accountabilities

Specific accountabilities include:

  1. Providing clinical, diagnostic, treatment and care services to client-owned, teaching and research animals presented to the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

  2. Participate willingly and diligently in the after-hours roster for the equine hospital.

  3. Assist with the preparation and presentation of laboratory sessions, seminars, tutorials and clinical instruction for undergraduate students in veterinary science and nursing, and in equine studies. Occasional lectures may be assigned.

  4. Contribute actively to the academic functions of the Institute by engaging personally in the academic enrichment of veterinary and equine studies. This will include:

    • assisting academic staff with their research as requested under the guidance of a principal investigator or postgraduate degree supervisor.
    • supporting the advancement of the veterinary profession through collaborating in the publication of case reports, reviews and retrospective studies based upon the clinical cases
    • presenting clinical observations at veterinary continuing professional development meetings
    • participate in case rounds and journal club meetings
  5. Acting to minimise threats to health and safety of staff and students

  6. Ensuring that all her/his teaching, research and other activities which involve the use of animals or tissues are conducted according to the Law and conform to the requirements of the Massey University Code of Ethical Conduct for the use of Live Animals for Teaching and Research.

  7. Contributing to meeting the administrative needs of the University, internally and externally, by participating in Institute and Group and Veterinary Teaching Hospital functions as may be required or approved from time to time by the Group Leader.

  8. Other reasonable duties as specified by the Institute Head, via the Group Leader.

Person specification

Qualifications

Veterinary professional degree (BVSc or equivalent) registerable with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand [http://www.vetcouncil.org.nz]. In the case of applicant that is only eligible for Limited Registration, demonstration of compliance with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand’s requirements for proficiency in English is necessary. Experience

Preferably a minimum of one to two years veterinary practice experience including horses. Recent competent graduates with a strong equine interest will be seriously considered.

Personal attributes and behaviours

A strong interest in equine health, medicine, surgery and husbandry; good initiative; flexibility; effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with collegial staff at Massey University. An enthusiasm for practical teaching to undergraduate students and equine veterinary practice are important attributes.
